CHAPTER TEN:
I have to admit, there’s a side to my profession which does not show off those of us who practice it in the best light. As Rhiheto revealed that he had gotten a hold of some person or another that was a member of this mysterious seventy-two, my first thoughts were not for that person’s safety. I didn’t wonder if it was a man or woman—it never occurred to me for even an instant that it might be a child. I didn’t consider that drug lords searching the jungle for short cuts to power might turn to torture to get the information they wanted.
No, all I considered was “the story.” Suddenly there was a lead, a link to credibility. A reason to be interested. A possibility for a by-line. It’s like that moment in the first Raiders movie, when Indiana Jones has the drop on the bad guys and threatens to blow up the Ark. The bad guy bluffs him, tells him to go ahead and do it because he knows Jones won’t—because he knows Jones has to know the truth. It’s the kind of thing that keeps a cameraman filming a disaster instead of running out to help someone.
I could see the approval of my reaction in Rhi-heto’s face. He knew I was intrigued. Smiling, he asked;
“So, you really didn’t know the seventy-two referred to seventy-two people, did you?”
“Like I told you, candles, dreams … I figured it was just another legend. The world is full of them, you know.”
“This is true, Señor … but I must admit, a man such as yourself, I thought you would have more interest in … how can I say … something like this.”
“A man such as myself…?”
And then it hit me. Granted, I had only been awake a couple of minutes, but it came back to me … the fact that this guy in the middle of nowhere knew my name. As I blinked hard, finally driving the last of the sleep from my eyes, I saw Shibley and Bernstein being herded across the campsite to where Logan and the others were being held. Bernstein looked as worried as any of the others, but there was something in Shibley’s manner that told me once again I might not be holding all the cards I needed to win the next hand. Before Rhiheto could respond, I said;
“You know who I am.”
“I do.”
Turning my head, I stared at Shibley—glared, really—until I saw in his eyes that he realized what it was I had just figured out. The tiniest trace of a smile curled the edges of his mouth as he raised his eyebrows several times, indicating that he knew what I was thinking. Turning back to Rhiheto, I asked;
“I guess my big question is, did you know who I was before or after the American State Department got in touch with you?”
“Truly excellent,” answered the drug lord, his head bobbing up and down in appreciation. “You are everything I was told you would be.
